Definitions of measurement:
Grade - The rise over run, or angle, of the 4WD roadbed measured on an 6 foot span laid parallel or in line with the roadbed.
Pitch - The rise over run, or angle, of the 4WD roadbed measured on a 6 foot span laid perpendicular or across the roadbed.
Width - The physical width of the 4WD roadbed at the narrowest section.
Surface - The material and physical description of the 4WD roadbed.
Obstacle - The measurement of the diameter, height, length, depth, of an obstacle in the 4WD roadbed.

Other considerations are the number of occurrences of a characteristic that are required for a 4WD road to receive a particular difficulty rating. Typically only one occurrence of a specific level of obstacle gives the 4WD road that difficulty rating. This is to insure that recreationists are not attempting a challenge that is beyond their ability.
Level 3 Road - These roads are considered collector roads and are graded with ditches and culverts. They are usually wide enough for vehicles to pass and have a moderate comfort level for travel. | ![]() |
Level 2 Road, Difficulty 1 - These roads follow the landscape and have road base material added to improve comfort. They receive a higher level of maintenance. | ![]() |
Level 2 Road, Difficulty 2 - These roads are natural surface with some maintenance work. | ![]() |
Level 2 Road, Difficulty 3 - These roads are natural surface with some maintenance work. There will be sections with rocks, ruts and pot holes that will slow traffic. | ![]() |
Level 2 Road, Difficulty 4 - These roads have high clearance vehicle requirements. They will be natural surface and are usually "two tracks" instead of a full width road.![]() |

Level 2 Road, Difficulty 5 - These roads are natural surface with little modification or road fill efforts. They will be rough with small to moderate size obstacles. |

Level 2 Road, Difficulty 6 - These roads are natural surface with little modification and no road fill efforts. They will be rough with moderate size obstacles. |

Level 2 Road, Difficulty 7 - These roads are natural surface with no modification or road fill efforts. They will be rough with large obstacles. |

Level 2 Road, Difficulty 8 - These roads are natural surface with no modification or road fill efforts. They will be very rough with large obstacles. |

Level 2 Road, Difficulty 9 - These roads are natural surface with no road fill material. They consist of very large obstacles that require vehicle and driver capability to negotiate. |

Level 2 Road, Difficulty 10 - These roads are natural surface with no road fill material. They consist of huge obstacles that require customized vehicles and drivers with a lot of experience to negotiate. |
